Edible Estates
According to Fritz Haeg, your front lawn is hostile territory. A banal waste of land, water and fertilizer. Edible Estates, a project of the Los Angeles architect/artist, proposes to change all of this. To create regional prototypes, five suburban front lawns have already been

transformed into diverse, highly productive gardens. Haeg refers to this concept as "full frontal gardening" in his book on the practice, titled Edible Estates: Attack on the Front Lawn. In addition to providing the most locally grown food possible, there are many other benefits to Edible Estates.
The average irrigated lawn consumes almost 90 gallons of water daily and doesn't produce a single serving of food. In addition to making the land productive, these projects reconnect land owners with the seasons, the weather, and their neighbors. Each yard becomes a unique product of the location, the crops growing, and the people living on the property. The local production of food and greening of yards also reduces carbon emissions.
Haeg intends to complete nine regional prototype gardens, and hopes the planet-saving concept described in his book will inspire others to act where they have the most influence, on their own private property.
